Summer is finally here! The winter is behind us leaving behind any cold flow issues however new issues can be festering in our tanks and fuel systems.
With the addition of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) and biodiesel, microbial growth (Bugs) has become an increasing issue in our industry. You might be saying, “But I don’t use biodiesel!” But did you know that most diesel fuel purchased today can have between 2-5% biofuel?
Biodiesel Is a fuel comprised of mono-alkyl esters of long chains of fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats that meets the fuel specification requirements of ASTM D6751. The blending of the biofuel into our diesel is part of the renewable fuel mandate. In essence, whether you know it or not, it’s probably present in your supply chain.
Your fuel tank also has several things working against it: Time, Temperature and Water. Water? Yes water! All diesel fuel has a level of water present. Statistics tell us that for every 10,000 gallons of delivered diesel fuel, one gallon of water may be present. Through good housekeeping this issue can be remedied and controlled.
Time + temperature + water = microbial contamination = Bugs! These bugs are microscopic organisms that feed on the fuel and live in water. Signs that indicate microbial contamination include…
• Plugged filters and fuel lines
• Rotten egg or foul smell of fuel
• Injector issues
• Low MPG
