Powering a Lower-Carbon Future: Diesel Direct Delivers Neste’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel to Amazon Air

August 13, 2025

Diesel Direct is proud to play a critical role in one of the most ambitious sustainable aviation initiatives on the West Coast. Neste, the world’s leading producer of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), has reached an agreement with Amazon to supply 7,500 metric tons (2.5 million gallons) of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ to support Amazon Air cargo operations at San Francisco International Airport and Ontario International Airport through the end of 2025.

This agreement makes Amazon the first company to purchase and use SAF at Ontario International Airport, one of the top 10 cargo airports in the United States. It’s a milestone for the aviation industry — and a proud moment for Diesel Direct as a trusted logistics partner in delivering this low-carbon solution.

Amazon’s Commitment to Net-Zero Emissions

Amazon has set a bold target to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, and reducing aviation’s environmental footprint is essential to achieving that goal. The adoption of renewable aviation fuel is a major step toward decarbonizing air cargo operations, lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and supporting cleaner skies.

Neste and Amazon’s partnership began in 2021 at Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany, and now, California’s major cargo hubs are part of the mission.

Diesel Direct’s Role in SAF Delivery

For San Francisco International Airport, Neste’s SAF flows directly through existing pipeline infrastructure — a seamless integration into the airport’s fueling system.

At Ontario International Airport, Diesel Direct steps in. We transport Neste’s SAF from terminal facilities in Los Angeles using our dedicated fleet fueled exclusively by Neste MY Renewable Diesel™, ensuring the transportation process itself is powered by a low-carbon fuel.

This not only minimizes the carbon footprint of SAF logistics but also demonstrates how renewable diesel can reduce emissions across multiple modes of transportation.

What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a renewable alternative to traditional, fossil-based jet fuel. Neste MY SAF is produced from 100% renewable waste and residue materials like used cooking oil and animal fat waste.

When used neat, it can reduce GHG emissions by up to 80% over its life cycle compared to conventional jet fuel. It is drop-in ready, meaning it can be blended up to 50% with fossil jet fuel and used in existing aircraft engines and fueling infrastructure without modifications.

Why This Matters for the Future of Transportation

By leveraging SAF for aviation and renewable diesel for ground transport, Diesel Direct and Neste are proving that low-carbon fuels can work hand-in-hand to cut emissions at every stage of the supply chain. This collaboration not only supports Amazon’s climate goals but also serves as a model for how companies across industries can decarbonize their operations.

Key Takeaways:

  • 7,500 metric tons of Neste MY SAF delivered to Amazon Air operations in California by the end of 2025.
